Almost there, and not giving away details until the trip is done. After flying haphazardly from LGA to Anchorage and a night at a Holiday Inn Express, everything here is laid back, the airport is immaculate, and the air is breathable. Three hours to Talkeetna.

Day 2: Four hours killing time at the airport, then on the road to Talkeetna with the team. A grocery stop at Carr's, a small town with a hotel called the Tee Pee, and the surprising luxuries of cell service and free wifi. The plan: fly to the Kahiltna glacier Thursday.

Day 1: New York to Atlanta to Salt Lake City to Anchorage, nineteen hours of travel, a hundred pounds of duffel bags, and a driver who tried to charge me for his own lateness. Capped off with the worst pizza I have ever had. I hope I haven't become a New York pizza snob.

Everything I own in New York that isn't furniture or a computer now fits in two duffle bags, ready for tomorrow's flight to Anchorage. Eight days unshaven for protection against the mountain. Note to self: buy more AA and AAA batteries.

Bases of Pi

Falling asleep, I wondered whether pi looks more interesting in other bases. So I took 50 digits, made a bignum, and looped from base 2 to 36. Base 32 spells undocs, base 31 says sack. Not that interesting. But is there such a thing as a fractional base?

A BigMath release before I leave for Alaska: nth root support, string-to-bignum, and a half-finished calculator GUI. I also talked myself into, and then out of, distributing a single number's memory across multiple machines.

Is Java Dying?

I just want an RPC server for Java that doesn't drag in the over-grown train wreck that is J2EE. Even the Apache XML-RPC developers can't explain why people keep using their workaround of a WebServer instead. Actually, the reason seems obvious.

BigMath on the Free Software Directory

Turns out my BigMath project is listed on the Free Software Directory, where it ranks #2 on Google for BigMath. The #1 slot belongs to something called Big Math Attack!, which looks like Windows 95 math tutoring software. I hope this post doesn't help it.
