Climbing Shuksan & Baker

Climbing Shuksan & Baker

We made it about half way up fisher chimneys before we admitted that we're too slow at rock climbing and that we left too late and if we persisted we'd be descending (the same route) in the dark. Not fun. So we rappelled back down to he ice and headed back to camp at Lake Ann.

After a rest day at Silver Fir campground and a lot of pizza at Chair 9, we headed over to Baker, which is conveniently located adjacent to Shuksan. Summit day was a full fifteen hours (which I survived on two candy bars, one power bar, a handful of life savers and a liter of water). Also, we waited around for over an hour for our turn to climb the ice cliffs. Serious traffic jam going on up there.

The sun was partially obscured by a haze the first half of the day. I learned later that the cause of the haze was that of Canada being on fire. I hope they fix that. It also explained why I thought I smelled barbecue all day.

Leaving for Yosemite in a couple days.

Shuksan, Baker trip photos are here.
