Paris Hilton
I loathe to admit that I'm even aware of some goings on in Paris Hilton's life. But I am. So, she went to jail for doing something stupid (but victimless), and received preferential treatment (home confinement). Then, after she was moved back to the jail (due to public outcry), her family was allowed to visit while no one else was allowed to.
So what?
She is rich and famous and she consequently received preferential treatment. This isn't exactly forging new ground. Why are so many people upset by this?
I think people are confusing the issue. The standard is set for the punitive measures available for this particular crime. And if you get caught, you can expect to spend some time in jail. In Paris' case, she is not getting what she does deserve (according to this standard). And if you get caught, you will likely get exactly what you deserve.
I could understand an outcry if the system supported one's continued confinement until you could buy your way out of jail. But that's not what's going on here. She's getting off easy (although she'd probably claim otherwise), and everyone is pissed off.
When you're rich and famous, you'll likely get the same treatment. And then would you be so upset?
Get over it.
One more thing before I try to end this rant. A quote from ABC News:
"It's not right," he said. "Paris gets visitors when everything's closed because she's rich. We're supposed to be equal."
Holy cow. Equal??? Paris gets paid to go to parties and clubs. She stands to inherit billions of dollars. Every notable manufacturer on the planet has probably paid her to use its products (cars, jewelry, clothing, etc.). I don't know who this was that they were quoting, but unless it was Bill Gates or Larry Elison, he is sadly mistaken about this supposed equality.
