A Science Project with the Kids: Learn, Design, Construct & Test an Antenna

I am in need of an antenna. I could probably buy a purpose-built one and be done with it. I could definitely make one myself. With a little bit of patience, I could also turn this into an interesting learning experience for a couple of my kids, and let them do the bulk of the work. Okay, maybe a lot of patience.

Accepting that plans will change, none of this is set in stone with the exception of the target frequency: 1090MHz.
