A Moral Obligation
What is my moral obligation in this situation? I recently ordered a Dell Inspiron 537s (which isn't a laptop, despite its name) which is scheduled to arrive tomorrow and on which I intend to run linux so that I have a production-like environment on which I can get clang/llvm working and makefiles set up.
But this computer comes with some version of Windows. I don't recall which one. Probably one of the versions that came after Windows 2000. I can't remember their names at the moment, but that's not important. I see three possible outcomes of this undesired Windows ownership situation:
(1) I destroy the install disc and serial number thereby removing one potential Windows installation from this universe.
(2) I sell / give away the install disc and serial number to someone who has a thing for sullying computers, and thereby "wipe my hands" of it.
(3) I pursue a refund from Dell for Windows, thereby taking money back from the company that seeks to profit from the distribution of Windows. They probably don't actually re-circulate the Windows disc / serial number, and they're also out the money.
Haven't figured it out yet....
