My Fifteen Minutes

I largely finished up my latest programming endeavor [glowworm.us] the other day, and I started working on the web site - my least favorite thing to do. To assist in avoiding that task, I decided to do something else. First, some background.

Back in 1999, I had a relatively popular web site, and "banner ads" were all the rage. No good software for managing advertisements really existed, and certainly no go software for offering the web-based service of ad management existed, and so I wrote a program called BannerFusion. It truly was the shiznit. Whatever that means. It just sounded right.

I gave away the program to anyone who wanted it, and it was pretty popular - completely unbeknownst to me. Sporadically, and without any assistance on my part, people created a community forum for BannerFusion ... where the many users got together to assist each other with questions and so forth. There were BannerFusion experts out there, who I didn't even know existed. Crazy stuff.

As with all free projects, eventually something else took over my attention, and I neglected BannerFusion. But, I'm here to tell you, the program lives on.

So, back to where we started - I was wanting to avoid working on the web site, so I started digging around on Google for any mention of BannerFusion. Well, I Found Someone Who Still Uses It. Absolutely insane. I found countless web sites that listed banner advertisement software, with BannerFusion in the mix. I found several articles that gave short reviews to such software, including BannerFusion. But, the best was a resume ... some guy who stated that he, worked on installation and development of BannerFusion.

I had my fifteen minutes, and I didn't even know it.
