The Taste of Betrayal
It was night. The kids were in bed and asleep, finally. My wife was finishing up a baking project, which I inspected. "Are those carob chips in that banana bread?" Of course they weren't, but for some reason carob chips had popped into my mind.
If you're not familiar with carob chips, they were this 1980s anti-chocolate health craze. Much like the disappointment of biting into an oatmeal-raisin cookie, thinking it was a chocolate chip cookie, carob chips were another means for mothers to disappoint and frustrate their children in the name of health.
The next time you bite into a delicious snack with chocolate chips, remember to be thankful that carob chips are not still a craze. "Nuts" are still out there, as evidenced by this allrecipes carob chip description.
Carob chips could be likened to chocolate chips' cool, older cousin. They are not as sweet or rich but have a roasty, nutty flavor all of their own. Similar to chocolate but intriguingly different, carob is its own ingredient that deserves a spot in your baking pantry.
No. No they do not deserve any such thing.
