Why do Carseats Expire?

Whatever studies exist that justify the notion of carseat expirations, I'm confident they were authored by the same folks responsible for tobacco companies "proving" that nicotine isn't addictive and cigarettes aren't harmful.

I've got a perfectly good carseat that I probably can't even give away because of this ingrained fear of carseat expirations. You win, Big Carseat. You win.
