Caustic Realtors

Caustic Realtors

I've been looking around for a larger house to rent. I found a few strong contenders (via Zillow, of course). I reached out to the respective contacts for each. One had been on the rental market (vacant) for months. The realtor didn't answer the phone when I called. In my experience, good realtors always answer the phone, even if they have to explain that, "I'll call you back shortly." But they always answer the phone.

I left a voicemail for her and followed up later with a text message. Eventually she called me back. I hit her with my questions about the house, and she reciprocated with questions about my income, credit and so forth. Each satisfied, the conversation progressed.

I explain that we're looking to move in two-or-so months.

Her: Yeah, that's going to be a problem.
Me: It's too long of a wait?
Her: Yes. The owner wants to rent the house immediately.

(Remember, it has been on the market, vacant, for months, for some reason.)

Me: Well, if we like it, I'd be happy to sign a lease right away.
Her: I bet you would!
Me: And provide the deposit, of course.
Her: Well, I'll check with the owners.

Caustic, much?

We had a tentative meet-up that weekend. I don't hear from her until the day before our meet-up:

Sorry I am not going to make it tomorrow.

No re-schedule. No explanation. No feedback regarding the owner's thoughts on the move-in date. Nothing.

I am at a complete loss as to why this house hasn't been rented. Cannot figure it out!

As an aside, I've been in a bad property management rental situation before and I've been in a rental with amazing landlords. It makes a huge difference to your quality of life. The last thing you want is for your home to be a stressful place due to bad property management. I'd be very cautious about renting from her if she's going to be involved after the lease is signed. Thankfully, there are plenty of houses to consider.
