Dad, were dinosaurs alive 65 million years ago?
If Adam was created a grown man, did he have a belly button? Did the first trees, made full-grown, still have rings? A backseat question about dinosaurs opens an old puzzle: what is the difference between something truly ancient and something created to look that way?
On the drive to church this morning H hits with me with a casual question:
H: "Were dinosaurs alive sixty-five million years ago?
Nothing like some light conversation while we're on the road! My answer started with a simple, "no." Of course, that's not sufficient in itself. The Christian view of creation has several popular variations.
- Young Earth: literal six-day creation
- Old Earth: each "day" is a long age
- Framework: it's complicated; the "string theory" of creation viewpoints; useless outside of purely theoretical conversations; popular amongst people who thrive on disagreement
And there are others. There's always more. We're going to disregard any of the evolutionary viewpoints as outside the scope here.
