Home Again, Home Again

Home Again, Home Again
South Terminal of the Atlanta Airport. It definitely did not look like this when I moved to Atlanta in the 1990s.

In one sense, the good news is that I didn't wake up to my 02:30 alarm. Instead I woke up a couple times throughout the night, checking my clock to make sure I hadn't somehow slept through my alarm. Finally, I woke up at 2am and decided it was time to cancel the alarm and get started.

I went down to the road a few minutes early and the car was already parked out front. The driver stopped at a gas station on the way to the airport. Based on the duration of the stop, I'd say he had to poop. Kind of peculiar.

Airport security in Turkey is funny. Immediately upon entering the doors to the airport building, you go through security (x-ray + metal detectors). At that point, you can access ticketing / check-in / baggage drop. Then you're ready to go to your gate, which starts with going through passport control. That dumps you straight into regular airport security (another x-ray + metal detector). Finally, when you get to your gate, there's another passport check. I guess it all serves a purpose, even though it seems excessive and unnecessary to me...?

Each time I do an international transfer, you go through another airport security, which is interesting and unexpected. You went through security to get on the plane, and now you're going to go through security to get on another plane? I guess they just don't trust the airport from which you departed?
