Starlink Mini on a Hot Tin Roof
A lightning storm knocked out our neighborhood internet. This is a minor annoyance for the family and a awful for my job. The ISP promised one to two days. A week later, another week. So I strung a hundred feet of ethernet through the house and mounted a Starlink Mini on the porch roof.
While I was in Turkey, I tried to remotely connect to my computer at home, to get some files. No dice. I checked with Tailscale and my home computer wasn't connected to the Tailnet. That's not good.
I texted S to ask about home internet. She explained that there was a pretty crazy electrical storm the night before. Internet had been out all day. and that might be the cause.
I got in touch with the landlord. The ISP said that service should be restored in the next 1 - 2 days. Fast forward a week, and service is still out. The lack of internet is a minor annoyance in the lives of my wife and children, but it is kind of essential for my continued employment.
I was about to go on a run this morning when I decided that I'd just quickly dust off the Starlink Mini, get it set up, and then hit the trails. Ha ha ha. Such naive optimism after all these years.
