Vacations leave me with no desire to get back to work, so today I fed that desire by making challah bread. Flour, an eternity of kneading, braiding by magic, and one mysterious extra egg. This has been Chef Master Curtis.

Scrooge
Scrooge is a title I don't much object to. What bothers me is saying "Merry Christmas" and "Happy New Year's" when I cannot do so genuinely. I am no less joyful the rest of the year. Yeah, just call me Scrooge.
My Trip to Atlanta
A trip to Atlanta in fragments: a single malt that ruined whiskey for my budget, a scuba proposal in the whale tank at the Georgia Aquarium, four cats (one of which ate my shoe), cookies docked to an 8.25 for oatmeal, and a leap second I fully intend to watch for.
Stylin'
Every time I shower right before bed, my hair stands straight up in the morning and nothing will coax it down. So my late after-gym shower leaves me choosing between unconquerable hair or going to bed a little gross. I guess I'll get used to the hair.
Laundry
When you wait eight and a half weeks between laundry sessions, it really takes a chunk out of the day. But now I have clean clothes until February. Buying new clothes is often more convenient than doing laundry, I've found.
Death by Shopper
A couple thousand people pounded through the glass doors of a Long Island Wal-Mart on Black Friday and trampled an employee to death. When asked to leave so police could deal with it, the shoppers refused; they had been waiting since yesterday. Absolutely insane.
Wine: Angeline 2006 Pinot Noir of Sonoma County
The first thing this wine has going for it is that it is not yesterday's Shiraz. A little fruity, supposedly earthy (which thankfully does not taste like dirt), and it nicely complemented some salmon and the after-salmon goldfish crackers. Very likable. $15.99
Wine: Blackwing 2006 Shiraz of South Australia
My answer to Nate's beer blog. I almost always buy Pinot Noir, so tonight I strayed and tried a Shiraz. It started out almost buttery, which is not what I look for in a red wine, or any color wine, or anything except butter. Not disappointing, just not what I'm after.
Rice Cooker
I want to buy a rice cooker, but I know nothing about them. Are they all made equal? Is there a best brand, a best model, handy features to look for? Tell me. Someone.
Holy Crap
Training for McKinley with no mountains in NYC, so I've been running the stairs of my 35 story building. Then I read about the Empire State Building stair race: 1,576 steps, 86 floors, and the winner does it in about ten minutes. Holy crap. I've got a long ways to go.
