Don't Wake a Five Year Old at 5am

"A" wants to go to the gym with me, but I get up at 5am. I'm just not willing to wake up the 5yo that early. "S" goes to the gym right after me though, so she took him along this morning for a workout of jumping, running, medicine balls and more.

Swimming a Mile

5am alarm again.

I was concerned that my shoulder wasn't going to permit me to swim at all. Considering that I had some late-night fried chicken, I felt obligated to get in a solid workout. And I did. The pain went away after a couple laps, and I took it easy the whole time. Next thing you know, I'm at a mile (more or less).

Two issues.

First, I think I failed to count a lap, and then I think I skipped a lap, which evens out if I'm correct on both errors. I need those smart swim goggles. Second, I didn't swim the last ten yards because I just don't care that much. I'm calling this a mile.

In my daydreams, it turns out the pool is twenty-five meters instead of twenty-five yards, and I'm swimming well in excess of a mile, but I looked around online and found corroboration that the length of the pool is in fact twenty-yards.

Date Distance (Yards) Time (Minutes) Pace (Per 100yds)

2026-09-11 1,250 30 2.40
2026-09-14 1,500 37 2.47
2026-09-15 1,150 27 2.35
2026-09-17 1,750 43 2.46

So, it took twelve workouts to get up to a mile. Now I just need to (1) start bringing my time down, and (2) avoid repetitive strain injuries. I think I'll start working in some sprints.

S and A Hit the Gym

S let me know last night that she wanted to head to the gym as soon as I got home from the gym. It really is the best time for her to go. If you don't knock out the gym trip in the morning, the day just gets away from you and then the gym trip never happens.

As I was heading home, S woke up A and off they went. A had been bugging me during the past couple of weeks to take him, but I'm just not willing to wake up a five year old at 5am. 6:30am seems a lot less unreasonable for his age. According to S, he turned a few heads. He got in some time on the treadmill, and then "worked out" with the medicine balls, ran some laps around the studio, and played with a jump rope and some "baby" dumbbells. It sounds like a solid workout for a five year old.
